Winter Festival wrapped-up

The 2011 Prince Albert Winter Festival came to a close Sunday.

Darrell Prokopie, Winter Festival president, said this year’s two-week event was filled with a lot of highlights.

“Our crowds, I believe when all the numbers are in, are going to be very strong and probably up from the last number of years,” he said.

The crowning of the king and queen, accordion entertainment and jigging all had crowds that were about double the normal size, he said.

He said the Children’s Carnival was also a big hit. By 2 p.m. on Saturday, he said they had as many people go though as they did during the entire Winter Festival last year.

“We introduced a couple of new events. I think the relocation down to the exhibition centre for the bulk of our events has been a positive move, but having said that we still have very strong spectator support up on the Marquis Road,” Prokopie said.

He said there are some things that will need work. The three-on-three road hockey tournament was almost non-existent. While he is not sure of the exact reason things did not go over well he said the fee could have been too high.

“(There’s) a lot of rejigging to be done, I think a lot of things we could do differently, I think a lot of things we can incorporate into the festival,” he said.

Prokopie said it will take the whole community to bring the event to its full potential.

“We need good people, we need good events, we need good feedback, again feedback whether it is good or bad because we’ll take from it, we’ll learn from it. We just need the community to stay behind the Prince Albert Winter Festival.”

With the 50th anniversary coming up in only three years, he wants all the kinks worked as soon as possible.
