Food Bank hosts Black History Month event

The Prince Albert Share-A-Meal Food Bank was a flurry of activity Wednesday afternoon as volunteers set up for the Black History Month event.

The food bank partnered with the Multicultural Society of Saskatchewan for the event.

Marge Nainaar, vice-chair of the Share-a-Meal Food Bank and executive director of the Prince Albert Multicultural Council, said black history month is all about honouring the contribution of people from Africa to Canada.

Nainaar also said they put on the event for Prince Albert residents to get to know the black community better.

“We want to bring them and make sure they meet one another and mingle and they get to know one another so in the street they can greet each other and become really mixing … (so we can ) be a real multicultural society.”

Titilayo Adefuyo with the multicultural council is originally from Nigeria and said she think the campaign is a really nice thing.

“(It’s) in celebration of black history month… (which lets us) celebrate each other and (lets) them know we are all the same,” said Adefuyo.

Matt Rapley was also volunteering — he is a musician and travelled from Regina for the event.

“I got involved with this because I’ve been doing a few Black History Month events in Regina and a friend of mine let me know about this and she said, ‘Matthew, it would be great to have you down there’ … I was all hyped to do it,” Rapley said .

Only a few years ago Rapley didn’t even know black history month existed, but after he learned about it he said he became excited about it.

“It’s just cool knowing that we’re talking about my history,” said Rapley.

Guests at the event were treated to a traditional African stew and live music by Rapley.
