Sled dogs race off

Feb 22, 2011 | 2:46 PM

The 14th annual Canadian Challenge took off on Central Ave. in Prince Albert at noon today.

The sled dogs constant barking filled the air as their handlers made last minute preparations. Once the teams took off however, the canines were completely silent and focused on the five day trek.

There was no shortage of excitement from the people who massed downtown to watch the big start.

The crowd spanned several city blocks to see the 12-dog and eight-dog teams from across the Prairies.

Bart De Marie took the role of a handler this year, which is new experience for him.

“Normally, I’m the guy on the runners. Now I’m going to help my brother and sister in-law out to hopefully give them a safe journey all the way to La Ronge,” De Marie said.

While it is neither warm, nor sunny, this is exactly the type of weather the sled dogs love.

“There’s a magic temperature … you don’t want it too warm and cold is good, but not super, super cold.”

Randy MacKenzie came from Fort McMurray, AB is taking a 12-dog team on the five-day trek.

“It’s the start of a long haul, 320 miles, so we’ll be pretty tired by the time we get there,” MacKenzie said.

The five day Canadian Challenge ends Saturday in La Ronge.
