The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is set to happen in La Ronge for the first time.

Chandra McDougald and her mother attended the relay in Prince Albert for the last couple of years.

After she realized how many teams were going to Prince Albert from northern Saskatchewan

McDougald said she wanted to bring the relay north to La Ronge.

“Things are coming together … teams are starting to register online which is quite exciting and word is getting out there, so it’s starting to fall together,” she said.

Relay for Life is organized to raise money for cancer research as well as be a celebration of those who have fought the disease.

McDougald said Canadian Tire in Prince Albert has agreed to match the first donations dollar for dollar up to $50,000 raised.

Laurie Dent, Prince Albert's unit manager of the Canadian Cancer Society, said they are really excited that La Ronge is on board with their own Relay for Life.

The committee in Prince Albert is helping the new La Ronge group with paper work and direction for how make the even run smoothly.

“It’s exciting because relay for life is such an all-encompassing event. For us it’s an opportunity to get the message of the Canadian Cancer Society out into yet another community and reach another group of people,” Dent said.

While organizing an event like this is a lot of work, McDougald said it is worthwhile for both herself and her mother.

“We both have had several family members fight the disease and are survivors and we’ve had several family members that have fought the disease and died. It’s near and dear to us and the more we raise money for cancer research the better off we all will be,” said McDougald

The Relay for Life in La Ronge will be May 13 at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.
