Donation allows kids to play hockey

Ranch Ehrlo’s Outdoor Hockey League is once again giving kids who usually wouldn’t be able to participate in hockey an opportunity to play Canada’s favourite sport.

“It helps with the promotion of good health. Instead of sitting around playing video games, the kids can come out and play hockey, enjoy a team sport, learn some team building exercises, learn some social skills, it’s very important to the community,” said Jason Tremblay, the sports venture coordinator for the Ranch Ehrlo Society.

The Outdoor Hockey League began in 1998, but due to volunteer issues it dwindled away by 2007.

However, thanks to a recent donation of $10,000 from RBC bank, the league is back. The donation was given out during a Raider game earlier this year.

Tremblay said about 60 to 80 kids show up, twice a week to hit the ice.

“It’s very exciting. I can’t imagine it going away again. It’s a blessing to our community, especially to those kids who just want to play, but can’t (afford it),” said Tremblay.

The money is used for the rental of the rinks, jerseys and helmets. Tremblay said they are also planning to have a medal ceremony at the end of the year and will purchase toques for the kids.
