The Mann Gallery of Art is Looking for a New Curator – Application Deadline is Feb. 18th, 2011

The Mann Art Gallery – Prince Albert, SK is looking for a permanent, full time Curator/Director.
The successful applicant will be responsible to The Mann Art Gallery Board of Directors.
Deadline for Applications: February 18, 2011.

Prince Albert is Saskatchewan’s gateway to the North, a vibrant community, located at the geographic center of Saskatchewan.

The Mann Art Gallery is entering a period of renewal with a new name, a new Strategic Vision, and a new benefactor.

The Mann family has committed $500 000 in new funds over 10 years with $20 000 being annually committed to the enhancement of our permanent collection.

The Board of The Mann Art Gallery has recently participated in governance workshops, policy building workshops and has just completed Strategic Planning.

Staff consist of 2 full time office staff with a ½ time gallery educator. Part time staff is on site over weekends.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director/Curator will:
• Participate in the planning, directing, coordinating and controlling of all aspects of development, operation,
security and maintenance of The Mann Art Gallery, here to after referred to as MAG;
• Develop and oversee staff requirements and personnel. Be responsible for hiring and annual review of staff, training and professional development;
• Oversee all aspects of displays and outside exhibitions;
• Keep the Board informed by monthly and annual reports on all matters pertaining to the programs, activities and operations of MAG.
• Initiate and organize exhibitions including research, writing, selecting works, arranging for loans, supervising catalogue production, designing and supervising the installation of exhibits;
• Prepare publicity for exhibitions and other Gallery events and programs;
• Develop a minimum of six(6) exhibits per year to be displayed at the MAG;
• Maintain a broad and current professional knowledge of activity in art and related fields.
• Adhere to acquisitions policy and ensures that acquisitions remain within set policies and budget;
• Guide the acquisitions committee in selection of significant works of art in respect to the ten $20 000 annual allotments to acquisitions and conditions thereof.
• Ensure that collections are properly researched, documented and catalogued;
• Arrange for appropriate insurance;
• Arrange loans and fulfil all legal requirements.
• Establish and maintain proper environmental controls for conservation;
• Establish requirements for and oversee handing of storage of art works;
• Establish and oversee security processes and practises.
• Develop and/or supervise educational programmes and extension activities in and out of MAG.
• Develop and maintain liaison with other educational groups and peer professional organizations.
• Provide information, support material and expertise.
• Prepare and/or supervise support material for exhibitions.
• Establish an exhibition programme, arrange loans of exhibitions and artworks and develop an in-house exhibition.
• Prepare a work plan including exhibitions, days open/days closed, workshops, opening events and special events.
• May be responsible for fabrication, design, preparation, production of interpretive material and installation.
• Ensure maintenance of high standards for physical (handling, storage, shipping), environmental (temperature and humidity control) and administrative requirement (insurance, budget control, advertising and promotion).
• Establish and implement annual budget;
• Search out public and private funding, prepare applications and information kits;
• Participate actively in fund raising ventures involving MAG;
• Advise the Board of funding required for specific purposes.
• Prepare publicity for exhibitions and other Gallery events and programs.
• Speak to staff, media and a diverse range of the public about art, the Gallery and the Gallery’s programs.
• Maintain key community liaisons.
• Represent MAG in dealings with the Federal and Provincial governments, municipalities, organizations of the community and individuals whose work is relevant to that of MAG.
• Represent MAG on suitable occasions.
• Develop and maintain good media relations.
• Write and/or approve all public relations material affecting MAG.
• Establish or further develop and supervise a volunteer body,
• Institute and maintain evaluation processes for public response, education value of programmes and staff
performance.

Our chosen candidate will have:
• A minimum of 3 years of exhibition and arts administrative experience.
• An MFA or equivalent education and experience, from an accredited university program.
• Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
• Strong networking skills
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
• A broad knowledge of and experience in Canadian and Saskatchewan historical and contemporary art.
• Acquired knowledge of the theory and concepts related to the organization and operation of a cultural institution.
• Ability to work without supervision.
• Proven abilities and success in the area of grant writing.
• Knowledge of and experience with funding agencies.
• Proven fundraising skills.
• An ability to organize and commit resources realistically.
