Illegally imported cigarettes seized in Saskatoon

Illegally importing cigarettes into Saskatchewan will not fly with the provincial government.

Tobacco enforcement agents seized 100 cartons of smokes from a courier depot in Saskatoon earlier this week. They were shipped from the Kahnawake reserve in Quebec, but the provincial taxes were not paid.

Saskatchewan law requires anyone importing cigarettes pay a tax of $42 per carton. Failing to pay can lead to a penalty amounting to three times the tax. Convictions may result in fines of $10,000 for an individual and $50,000 for a corporation.

The government believes the reserve is trying to expand its market presence in western Canada. Cigarettes from Rainbow Tobacco of Kahnawake have recently been seized in British Columbia and Alberta.
