Few answers in fatal accident

Jan 28, 2011 | 4:37 PM

“When members got to the scene it was confirmed that we had one deceased in one of the vehicles,” said Dale Goodman, RCMP staff sergeant.

RCMP got to the accident on Highway 11 near the Highway 2 junction, before the divided highway, at about 12:30 p.m. It involved a Prince Albert Northern bus and a van.

There were two occupants in the van at the time, one was deceased and the other was taken to hospital.

The passenger, a 24-year-old man, has been released from the hospital.

The bus was filled with a minor hockey team on their way to Swift Current. The coach did not wish to make a comment, but confirmed that there were no injuries inside the bus. The team transferred buses and continued south to their tournament.

Goodman said RCMP still don’t know what caused the accident.

“Certainly the roads were slippery earlier this morning, we responded to numerous accidents on Highway 302 because of cars in the ditch… at this point I can’t say if the road was slippery or not and whether or not the wind was a factor.”

The van was making a u-turn at the time of the collision.

He said there would be no further information until the traffic analyst finishes their report.

Goodman said, as for what happened, the scene speaks for itself.

“It was more of what we would refer to as perhaps a ‘T-bone accident,’ where the in this case the driver’s side of the one vehicle was hit by the front of the bus, so if you can picture a T or that sort of thing,” he said.

So far there have been no charges laid against the driver of the bus and Goodman said, at this point, he is not sure if there will be.

RCMP said they driver was a 71-year-old woman from Saskatoon. Her name is not being released.

The south lane of Highway 11 was closed most of the afternoon so traffic analysts could try and piece together what happened. Traffic was still flowing, but at a minimal rate.

The highway since reopened just before 5 p.m.
