Bad road conditions slow down drivers

Jan 28, 2011 | 9:36 AM

Highway Hotline says roads in the Prince Albert and Shellbrook areas are icy in some sections and the wind is also creating some treacherous conditions.

A trucker heading past Melfort was also struggling with wind this morning.

“I’m driving an empty semitrailer … the wind is gusting so hard it’s blowing the trailer pretty much into the ditch,” he said.

Highway 3 between Prince Albert and Birch Hills is mostly slush covered with a number of icy sections. The highway is wet and highway crews are using salt to deal with the ice.

“I probably drove between 50 or 60 most of the way to town and I wasn’t being passed … it was pretty slow going, so people have an excuse to be late today,” said Jordan Carrier, a Birch Hill resident, about his trip into the city.

Travel is not recommended in the Buffalo Narrows area and on Highway 41 between Saskatoon and Aberdeen.

Prince Albert RCMP advises travelers to use extreme caution on Highway 302, east of Prince Albert.

One driver reported the road to be sheer ice and passed a couple of vehicles in the ditch. RCMP have stayed busy this morning, responding to numerous vehicles in the ditch. So far, there have no reports of injuries being suffered.

Flights into Prince Albert were being rerouted Thursday night because of the winds.
