A woman in Ituna, Saskatchewan is now the oldest Canadian.

Born in 1899, Pearl Lutzko in nearly 112 years old.

Verna Adamiak says she’s baffled by her grandmothers longevity.

“We look into history and we read the books but to imagine that you lived it,” said Adamiak. “This is a very special occasion for her, for the whole family really because there are not very many families that receive that privilege.”

The family had known Pearl was the second oldest Canadian for nearly a year now.

On Sunday the title of oldest Canadian passed to her, when a Manitoba woman just a week older than Pearl passed away.

Verna says her grandmother has never been very ill, but other than that she doesn’t know the secret to her long life.

The family has been making a big deal out of Pearl's birthdays for the last 25 years, and the planning has already begun for her 112th on February 15th.
