Man who used his child as a human shield sentenced to jail

Gerald Dorion, 24, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, followed by a six-month probation for threatening police with a length of pipe.

The incident occurred on Nov. 2 at 4:49 a.m. in the 400 block of 18th Street West.

Police got a call that a group of men who had allegedly been fighting earlier in the morning had now kicked in the door of a nearby house. Upon arriving and announcing their presence, Dorion exited the residence with the pipe and approached the officers in a threatening manner.

After refusing to put down the weapon, police deployed pepper spray and Dorion fled back inside.

The officers pursued Dorion into the house, where Dorion used his 22-month old son as a shield against the police.

The police officers were eventually able to remove the child from harm and arrested Dorion without further incident.

Dorion plead guilty to one count of assaulting two police officers.
