More than 50 staff and patients suffering from norovirus at St. Paul’s Hospital

Jan 15, 2011 | 7:10 AM

These are some nervous days for patients and family members affected by the norovirus outbreak at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon.

Three units remain quarantined. As of Friday morning, 26 patients and 27 staff members had fallen ill.

Katrina Robinson's grandfather is on the fifth floor, one of the units closed off, awaiting surgery on his foot. He's not showing signs of norovirus, but he is alone and the family is not allowed to visit.

“It's out-of-city for him. He's originally from Humboldt,” Robinson said. “So he's obviously scared with the situation, but then we can't even go and see him or talk to him.”

Robinson said nurses are doing their best to keep the family up-to-date over the phone.

She added that her grandfather was being discharged Friday afternoon. He will return to the hospital once the outbreak clears up.

As to when that will happen is anyone's guess. Officials with the Saskatoon Health Region noted 11 new cases were detected on Friday. For the outbreak to end, four days must pass after the last new case of the virus.

In the meantime, St. Paul's is discharging those patients who are well enough to go home. That's part of SHR's strategy to snuff out the outbreak, which began on Jan. 5.
