Pat Atkinson, the longest-serving female MLA in Saskatchewan history, announced Tuesday she would not be seeking re-election.

“This is the end of this chapter, and the beginning of a new one,” Atkinson said to supporters and gathered media.

“By the next general election, I will have had the honour of representing Saskatoon-Nutana for 25 years. It’s time for renewal in Saskatoon-Nutana and a new beginning for me,” she said, telling reporters she has “absolutely no idea” what she will do after her career in provincial politics comes to a close.

Atkinson was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly in 1986 and was re-elected in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2007.
