Here Comes the Sun

Jan 12, 2011 | 10:41 AM

As George Harrison sang once, “Here comes the sun, de de de da. Here comes the sun and I say – it’s all right.”

I have to confess that the long, long holiday season, mixed with short days, unhealthy food, an expanding waist line and day after day without seeing the sun had left me feeling less than enthusiastic.

But it is getting on towards mid January. When I take my son to school, it is kind of daylight, and everyone is starting to peek out of their caves and start thinking of upcoming events and plans and things to do.

This week, I did stick my nose out of the cave long enough to buy skates, helmet, skate guards and stand in line for skate sharpening for my son to learn to skate. The sad fact is that I should have done this last year or the year before. We live in Kinistino and for those of you who don’t know – Kinistino is seriously a hockey town.

So I think I have been making excuses. Liam has slight cerebral palsy and when he looked up at me and cried,” I can’t momma.” I honestly didn’t know what to do. Was he playing me or was he genuinely having  trouble. I have found out that he was totally playing his mom and so this year … it was on.

We have a beautiful outdoor rink in town, just down the street, created and maintained by our fire department and so, with a brisk wind and a bit of short term sun – we made our way to the rink. I am not sure who was more scared – Liam or I, but I took him by the hand and patiently walked with him until – thanks to the God’s above – he could do it on his own and this time looked up with me with a look of victoriousness.

These are the moments!

So, now I feel encouraged to embrace the rest of the winter and all it has to offer.

Working with all your community groups – I see so much cool stuff going on. I am particularly looking forward to the Mosaic Music Festival at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. Another amazing event at the centre is To Save A Life movie which is offered free and which will have ASIST councillors on site.

I will be attending the Robbie Burns night in Tisdale this weekend which has traditionally been a night of fantastic local Highland talent, delectable food, lots of laughs and enviable traditon. The night features the Prince Albert Highlander Pipe and Drum band which makes these nights extra special.

The Prince Albert Caledonian Society will be hosting its amazing event later in the month and I hope to get to that as well.

The Library has a plethora of fantastic things to do for all age groups almost every day of the month.

Artists are getting ready for the Mann Gallery Winter Festival Art Show and Odyssey Theatre is presenting a new play.

There is so much to see and do and be involved with in Prince Albert.

I encourage you to read carefully through the Community Group News and check out the individual groups listed on the right side of the page.

Have a great week. It doesn’t matter that we are all chubby and it’s cold outside. We are all in the same boat and it is time to seize the day.
