School division not worried about deficit

It looks like a big number, but the local school board is not concerned.

In the latest budget documents submitted by the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division, they are looking at a $2.02 million deficit. It is jump from the $1.64 they saw last fall.

Dennis Moniuk, superintendent of business administration, said they are waiting for tax revenue to come in.

“I think normally what you see is there is varying time when people pay their taxes,” he said explaining most people will pay them by the end of this month, and it takes 30 days for the school division to get the money.

“It’s kind of normal. It’s the annual cycle.”

Moniuk said they have not received tuition fees yet either.

“I think if you add those two things together, that pretty well could make up our deficit number on current operations,” he said.

As of right now the school board has sufficient funds in place and are not looking at borrowing money.

“By the end of January our statement should reflect an improvement on the tax front.”
