Canadian Challenge Preparations Well Underway

Jan 8, 2011 | 3:10 PM

So far we have 15 entries – 10 in the 12-dog, 4 in the 8-dog and one Junior (yeah Keeler!) Expecting a few more yet so it should be quite a race this year.

The board is still working to improve our sponsorship position. This is always a lot of work, and if anyone can help us, please contact the office or a board member. We dream of long-term commitments . . .
We are planning to equip each musher with a SPOT GPS this year, as a step on the way to possibly providing live online tracking in the future. We had more than 19,000 hits on our website during the race last year, and expect that number to grow.

We have a new raffle – $5 for a chance at a $2,000 travel voucher from Lobstick Travel (thank you Lobstick). Pick up at the office or call any board member.

Hon. Gordon Barnhart, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, will be back at the banquet and start line this year, helping us launch the race. We are proud to have such a prestigious person involved with our race. Thank you, Your Honour!

CTV has expressed interest in broadcasting the start line live this year, so that will enable viewers in Saskatchewan to watch the start. Of course, we’d much rather have you there in person.
With the demise of the FleetNet service, which we always used for communicating on the trail, organizers will be using radios with about a 30 km radius this year. We’ll back that up with cell phone calls and texting.

Gerry Markel will again be the race marshall this year; he will announce his assistant shortly.
The trail boys are out hot and heavy under the direction of trail boss Daryl Minter – Cliff Jessup has kindly volunteered again, along with Logan Mattice; Derek Jacobsen and his crew have been working on the Missinipe area south to Contact Lake; Sid Robinson, Tm Charles and Redmond Fox are busy preparing the Neckbone trail, which doubles as the Challenge trail later on. the Neckbone runs Jan 22-23, only a couple of weeks away.

What else can I say – keep those entries coming. I think we’ll end up with more than 20 teams this year – great stuff!

More news soon! Enjoy winter!
