Next meeting for South East Annexation to be set

Jan 5, 2011 | 5:16 AM

City council will set a date for the next public information session regarding the proposed annexation of land south of Marquis Road and its subsequent development into light industrial land.

The city’s executive committee heard a recommendation from the city’s planning department that another public consultation about the property was warranted.

The report said people needed more information about what types of light industries could occupy the space, exactly where it would lie and where access points would be.

At the city’s executive committee meeting on Monday, councillors agreed that the people needed to know exactly what the situation was so they could give more informed input.

Councillor Martin Ring said the biggest frustration was over maps that showed the city had divided the proposed land into three phases. Since the city has no plans to use phases two and three, Ring said people should know exactly what the city wants to do.

“That’s where it really started to muddy the waters,” he said. “Basically we’ve been told that phase two and phase three have been taken off the drawing board and I think we have to be really crystal clear in what (phase one) is, how far it goes and then I think these people are probably going to be a little more receptive to it.”

Councillor Ted Zurakowski said he’d also like some other explanations provided to the public.

“It may be helpful to provide them with reasons why other locations were dismissed early on in the city, whether it be just outside the city proper or not,” said he said.

The executive committee approved the recommendation and city council will decide next week on a date for the meeting.

So far, the meeting will take place at the Carlton Park Community Hall
