Options available for a safe New Year

Dec 31, 2010 | 10:32 AM

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebrations, but it’s also a time to remember to not drink and drive says the Prince Albert Police Service.

“It’s a crime that doesn’t have to happen,” said Staff Sgt. Bill Chow. He said police will be out in force overnight to ensure the roads are safe.

“If we can prevent somebody from getting into an accident and hurting themselves or possibly other people, then that’s what we want to do.”

Aside from having a designated driver or staying the night there are other options in the city.

The first is to call one of the city’s cab companies.

Checker Taxi manager Russ McCoy, recommends customers either leave a little earlier than everyone else or stay a little later in order to ensure you don’t have to wait.

“Tonight, with the temperature where it is, we should have a fairly busy night,” said McCoy. “If you leave a little earlier before everyone else tries to get out and get a cab, you’re going to get one.”

“But I hope everyone’s using their brain and not trying drinking and driving.”

The other option tonight is the city’s Ding in the New Year Program.

City buses will be running from 7:15 p.m. on New Year’s Eve through to 3:15 a.m. Four routes similar to the day time routes will be running.

Buses are scheduled for once every half an hour and are completely free.

The Ding in the New Year bus route map is available here, or in bars throughout the city.
