New year, new chance to get fit

Dec 31, 2010 | 6:05 AM

It’s that time of year where people are starting to evaluate their lives and come up with New Year’s resolutions.

In Prince Albert several people said the new year will bring ambitions of learning new skills, being more philanthropic and after all the holiday snacking, many people are looking to get into better shape.

Fitness centers are about to see more people come through their doors.

Nolan Carter, from 4 Horseman Fitness in Prince Albert, said that they don’t really see a big jump in business until after January.

“We found that February is defiantly a bigger month for fitness and for health and certainly for phone calls and people asking questions. It seems that January people over spent, they’re going on holidays,” Carter said.

“When they come back in February that’s when they’re really thinking, OK, I’ve got to go hard. I’ve got to change my life. I’m done my holidays. I’m done eating at an all-inclusive hotel. And then they come back to town and they’re kind of focused more on working out and then health.”

Carter also warned against loosing motivation as the year goes on.

“A lot of people who make a new year’s resolution fade out rather quickly,” Carter said.

“One thing that people really have to look at though is instead of a new year’s resolution, look at it as a whole lifestyle change.”

In the summer there are a lot of outdoor activities that can keep people active. In a Saskatchewan winter it is harder to be active. Carter said joining a gym like the 4 Horsemen Fitness is a great idea even for people who don’t have a lot of fitness experience.
