Tax support important: Arts Board

It’s not final yet but the Prince Albert Arts Board could be receiving a $122,730 grant from the city.

In recent years the city, from its tax base, has provided some support for two organizations through the arts board – the Rawlinson Centre and the newly renamed Mann Art Gallery of Prince Albert.

“In the Last budget cycle there was $92,000 approximately that was earmarked for support of the $700,000 of programming at the E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts and approximately $29,000 was earmarked for the gallery side of the operations,” Mitchell Holash, of the Prince Albert Arts Board, said.

He suspects the 2011 budget will be another reflection of this.

Though the proposed grant may seem like a lot of money to some, Holash said it is actually only a small percentage of the operation cost.

“If the programming is to continue on that base and be as accessible to the community as it is right now, it will need to enhance revenue.”

Holash said they would need to look at the sources outside of the municipal tax base for support.

He added they have an innovative model to keep the cost for taxpayers down at the Rawlinson Centre.

The center tries to gain support from the art community and heavily relies on volunteers instead of just city funding to operate.

“That compares extremely favorably to almost any other municipality that you want to look at where their contribution towards the total operations is much closer to full thing.”

Holash said, because of recent donations, the Mann Art Gallery will do well if they receive support from the city that is similar to last year.
