The Little Things

Dec 22, 2010 | 9:35 AM

Over the past couple of weeks, along with everyone else, I have been Christmas shopping.

And like all parents, I am sure, I have been searching for that big ticket item. That one large present that is my child’s “main” gift. I am not talking about big money I just always buy one thing for each of the kids that is their main gift. Throughout my searching I have come upon a valuable life lesson and it is the lesson of “the little things”.

Searching high and low for gifts I have realized more than ever that it is the little things that I value not the presents under the tree or the money spent at Christmas.

It is when my daughters pitch in to help tidy the house because they know I am tired. It is the smell of my 5 month old baby’s head after a bath. It is dragging myself out of the shower to get ready for one more recital/concert and finding an “I love you” message in the mirror fog that my husband left before he went away to work. It is my 3 year old screaming “MOM!!” from the other room and when I scream back “WHAT!!” she says “I love you.”

It is the text messages from my teenage son asking me how my day was and telling me he loves me. It is the smell of the wood burning fireplace outside on a cold day. It is watching the sunrise on a clear frosty day. It is all these things and so much more.

This holiday season when the running stops and the relaxing begins I challenge you to focus on the little things. The cuddles, the words, the thoughtful moments. I pray that this holiday season brings you peace and prosperity with the ones who mean the most to you.

Make love and joy part of today and not a thing of the past by creating your own family traditions and memories.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from my home to yours.
