Wolves spotted near La Ronge

Dec 13, 2010 | 10:50 AM

Wolves are a common sight in Northern Saskatchewan this time of year.

It’s not so common is to see them in the residential areas.

“There has been quite a few sightings around the communities of Big Rock, Big Stone, and Fairchild areas,” said Sam Roberts, a band councilor with the Lac La Ronge Indian band.

“We've sent notices out to our schools to make sure our kids are not out at night walking alone.”

Roberts said he has heard the wolves are coming looking for food, as their normal food source is scarce.

A spokesperson for Saskatchewan Environment could not confirm the residential sightings.

“We really were not getting many calls to our office about those — in fact we didn't get any calls at all over the weekend,” said Daryl Minter who is the compliance manager for the La Ronge area.
Minter added that a wolf had been shot and killed in Air Ronge.

Saskatchewan Environment is now asking people who see a wolf to call their local conservation office.

Meanwhile, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band has already begun discussing solutions.

“There have been talks around band members that maybe we should put a bounty on these things, but right now our local dog catcher is going around keeping an eye on the area, ' said Roberts.

Daryl Minter would not say he was in favor or opposed to the idea. He said he would be willing to discuss it with the band.
