Fraser Institute rates SGI low

SGI said a Fraser Institute report is comparing apples to oranges.

The Fraser Institute accused the province of having some of the worst auto insurance in North America.

The report ranks Saskatchewan among the worst when it comes to price, choice and overall market quality.

SGI President, Andrew Cartmell, thinks the report is unfair.

He argues this province provides low, stable, auto insurance rates and has high customer satisfaction scores.

“Because we are a Crown corporation we invest in traffic safety which actually allows us to try and reduce accidents in the province which is the goal of insurance,” he said.

It fact, Cartmell likens the Canada, US comparison to holding up apples against oranges.

“The US has a much more open competitive system where the onus is on the individual to look after themselves. Where in Canada, we tend to have a stronger social safety net – we tend to look after each other.”

Cartmell thinks the report is just one more example of the Fraser Institute taking a run at regulation.
