CAA survey puts Saskatchewan worst for driving after drinking

Saskatchewan has a dubious distinction in a recent survey by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) about driving after drinking alcohol.

The poll finds 36 per cent of Saskatchewan respondents got behind the wheel after drinking at some point in the past year.

CAA surveyed some 4,000 members across the country. Saskatchewan had the highest rate in Canada.

“That could be, you know, you have one glass of wine, you had one beer after work, and you jumped behind the wheel,” said Lisa Wilson-Sturm with CAA Saskatchewan.

“For a number of people, I suppose that could mean that you're not over the legal limit. But it's still a statistic to look at.”

Even more shocking, one in five in this province think they may have been over the legal limit.

“I think that's the more disturbing figure when, clearly, a huge majority, 95 or 96 per cent, said that they know they shouldn't be doing it,” Wilson-Sturm said.

“We need to constantly be reminding drivers that drinking and driving, impaired driving is still a serious safety hazard on our roads.”

She added it's a particularly relevant message as Christmas parties kick into high gear. All you have to do is plan ahead to avoid becoming another statistic.
