Landfill fees set to increase

Dec 7, 2010 | 5:25 AM

An increase in user fees for the city’s landfill can be expected next year.

The city’s executive committee voted in favour of a proposal from the city’s finance department that would see many fees associated with the landfill increase.

In the committee’s recommendation to city council, minimum dumping fees will increase to $7.50 from $5 and the per-tonne rate would increase to $50 from $42.

Single-family residential units can expect to see an increase 40 cents per year starting in 2011, while multi-unit residential properties will begin to be charged on a per-unit basis.

Hardest hit will be the users who are not members of North Central Saskatchewan Waste Management who will be expected to pay double the rate as users from the membership.

The report was passed by the executive committee, but not without dissenting voices.

Councillors Jayne Remenda, Cheryl Ring and Darren Whitehead all suggested that such high increases,  would simply result in more illegal dumping.

“There’ll be dumping their garbage in local forests or people’s acreages,” said Remenda. “I do see the amendments causing that from some of the other municipalities so I won’t be supporting the amendments.”

The councillor’s dissenting voices wasn’t enough to hold back the recommendations.

But city council will have the opportunity to debate the changes next week.

According to the city, the increased revenue is needed to keep the facility running into the future. The biggest upcoming expense will be digging a new cell when the current one fills up, which is expected to take around four years.
