Highway tenders total $191 million

Contractors can now begin bidding on 39 highway projects in Saskatchewan worth an estimated $191 million.

The provincial government announced Thursday, the first round of highway construction tenders for the upcoming construction season.

A new bridge for the Village of St Louis will begin to take shape as embankment work will start on both the north and south bridge approaches.

The new bridge is being built 1.6 kilometres east of the village, and will eventually replace the 95-year-old iron, train bridge which has deteriorated in recent years.

The project, slated for completion in 2012, will also include new connecting roads from the new bridge to Highway 2 that will be constructed east of the existing highways, according to a release from the government last year.

The government is tendering another 22 km of paving and 42 km of grading work to advance the

Highway 11 twinning project between Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

Further progress will also be made on the new, all-weather road to Wollaston Lake. Another four km of grading work is scheduled to be done on Highway 995. That will leave about 87 km to finish in the years to follow.

Kirsten Leatherdale, a spokeswoman with the ministry of highways, said they’re exploring avenues for funding to speed up the project.

“We’re hoping to have some federal funding in place for this project. For right now we’re just … going to continue making progress,” she said.

Community leaders in Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation have long lobbied to have the road built to improve transportation and bring down the cost of goods and services. The community is current served by a barge and an ice road during the winter months.
