Freezing death ruled an accident

Postmedia News reports that the inquest jury in Meadow Lake has ruled the death of 19-year-old Kyle Lariviere in January 2009 an accident.

The reportedly intoxicated teen managed to escape from a squad car as RCMP constable Mitch Perry took him to the Beauval detachment.

Perry did not initiate a search for him, saying he thought the man had gone to a friend’s home. Lariviere's family later searched for and found his body. He had died from hypothermia.

The jury gave five recommendations with its ruling.

It wants the RCMP to consider putting bars on the back windows of its police cars, and to make sure officers are abreast of all policies.
