Ethanol plant is still a possibility for Prince Albert area

A project worth about $12 million remains a possibility in the Prince Albert area.

Shell has been working with Iogen towards the construction of a commercial ethanol plant.

Representatives from Shell and Iogen were touring the area this week.

“As you probably know, the former pulp mill site was identified as a preferred location, but in August we were informed by Domtar that the mill site would no longer be available to us, so what we are doing now is identifying alternatives sites,” said Larry Lalonde, a spokesman for Shell.

One site still being considered is the Birch Hills area.
Earl Mickelson, the Reeve of the RM of Birch Hills, had a chance to meet with the group this week.

“Some of the people I know, (said) that it would be a good idea that we got together to make acquaintances with new people and some people I had known I hadn't seen for a while,” Mickelson said.

The group coming together is a positive sign, said Mickelson.

Prince Albert Mayor, Jim Scarrow also met with the group and describes their meeting as positive.

“This project remains very much on their radar, but in terms of a time line it could be a year or two,” Scarrow said about Iogen making a decision about where to proceed.

Lalonde said he didn't want to get peoples' expectations raised too high, as Saskatchewan is one of many places in Canada being considered for the project.
