Correctional officers face off for a good cause

Correctional officers, federal vs. provincial, are facing off in a game of hockey.

Even though the Child Find Challenge Cup is for a good cause, the two teams are still going to battle it out for the bragging rights.

“(There’s) a lot of trash talking going on right now,” said Don Sather, a corrections officer with the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

“The jail guys are fairly confident, and that’s good. I think it’s a lot of false confidence. I’m putting the spread at about eight points this game.”

Both teams have skaters who played professionally, so Sather believes it will be an entertaining game for all of those who come and watch.

The proceeds will go to Child Find Saskatchewan, a non-profit organization focused on the recovery and prevention of missing children in the province.

“One of the things they do, they go to different schools and malls and they’ll put together a little package together with pictures of the child, and will fingerprint them. If, God forbid, on of (the parents’ children) go missing, they have all the important information that will assist the police in the recovery of a missing child,” said Sather.

This is the first year of the Child Find Challenge Cup and next year, Sather said he is hoping it’ll be even bigger.

“I’m really hoping to expand it and grow it into a tournament-style play next year, with the city police, the RCMP and basically all of the emergency services in Prince Albert,” said Sather.

The game takes place on Nov. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kinsmen Arena. Admission to the game is free, but they are asking for donations.

There will also be a dance held at the East End Community Club hall at 8 p.m.
