The Trial of Louis Riel in Prince Albert

Nov 17, 2010 | 11:01 AM

Arguably the most famous court case in Saskatchewan's history is going to be acted out on the Stage at the E. A. Rawlinson Centre in Prince Albert.

“The Rawlinson is certainly going to be a highlight. I believe the school show is just about sold out. I hear there are kids coming from La Ronge and all over,” said Peter Champagne is the Producer of the Trial of Louis Riel.

The Trial of Louis Riel is Canada’s longest running stage drama.

It started in the 60s in Regina and now, in honor of the 125th anniversary of the North-West Resistance, the production is going on tour hitting communities from Duck Lake to Melfort to Ottawa.

He has already been met in Regina and Saskatoon with sold out school and public shows.

The play takes the actual words spoken by the famed Métis leader Louis Riel at his trial and puts them on stage before a mock jury.

“Prince Albert is mention many times in the play, people that went there for this and that and just all of the events. You know Duck Lake and Fish Creek. Everything is all in this play and Riel gets to speak and when he does you get to see all of these issues exposed,” Champagne said.

The jury is made up of people from the audience. According to Champagne men, women and children dress up in period costumes to play jury rolls.

The public show is tonight at 7 P.M. at the E. A. Rawlinson Centre.
