Premier Brad Wall was the guest of honour at today's Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
Wall spoke about that pink stuff that has made national headlines this past week.
He said he's pleased the federal government said “no” to BHP Billiton's hostile takeover of PotashCorp. BHP Billiton has another 25 days to improve their offer to the federal government.
“Ours is not a bargaining position in the province of Saskatchewan. We put forward a position we feel strongly about. It’s a strategic position. It’s not about money. It’s about a long-term interest of Saskatchewan in this very strategic industry,” said Wall.
He said he is also against the NDP's suggestion of changing the province's royalties, saying consistency is key for investment in our province.
“We’ve seen what’s happened in other provinces where they’ve changed royalties. Companies invested not there in those places, but here in Saskatchewan. We want to keep that Saskatchewan advantage by having consistent royalties that provide a fair return to the people, and also create jobs and do not chase away investment,” said Wall.
Wall also touched on the forestry sector, saying it’s improving but not yet at the level he’d like it to be. He said while his government is against funding the pulp mill in Prince Albert, he is still working hard to find other avenues to reopen the facility.
