Accused in machete assault is a no-show for trial

There is a warrant for the arrest of the youth who allegedly assaulted a Prince Albert taxi driver with a machete.

Today was supposed to be his trial, but he didn't show up.

In fact, the defense said in court that she hasn't heard from her client and that police have been looking for him for two weeks.

Crown prosecutor Peter Hryhorchuk, said he wasn't surprised when the youth was a no show.

“We had thought he wouldn’t show, because there is a warrant for him right now for another offence regarding his recognizance, so we were fairly certain he wouldn’t show, and actually I had cancelled my witnesses previously,” said Hryhorchuk.

The youth will now be additionally charged with failing to appear.

Back in April, the accused allegedly beat a Checker Taxi driver with a machete. The driver received more than 100 stitches and lost several teeth.

“I think he [the victim] wanted it [the trial] to be done today. I think he wants to move on,” said Hryhorchuk.

The youth was released on bail after the alleged attack, and then allegedly caught while trying to steal a truck in Debden in June. Once again, he was released on bail.

The youth is pleading not guilty to all charges.
