Rawlco Centre for Mother Baby Care pleases users, staff

Mothers giving birth in Regina can expect a whole new experience now that the Rawlco Centre for Mother Baby Care has opened at the General Hospital.

It is being described as one of the most advanced and family-friendly facilities in Canada. There are 36 private rooms, the latest high-tech neonatal monitors and spacious delivery rooms. The area is a big change from the facilities available to staff members working with families welcoming their newest members.

Head of the department Dr. George Carson says the centre reflects the now less clinical approach to giving birth.

“The model of care has changed. We certainly have the capacity to provide care in a more contemporary way,” said Carson.

“If the atmosphere in which the woman is laboring and delivering is one in which she can feel comfortable and relaxed, the whole process just goes better.”

Nurse Danita Lang said some had their doubts such a facility would exist in Regina, but now that it is here, she said it is greatly appreciated by those using it.

“The families are really embracing it. It’s just a wonderful facility,” said Lang, who served on the planning committee.

Brandy Brown was one of the first mothers to give birth in the Rawlco Centre for Mother Baby Care. Compared to her experience with her first child, she says it was a whole different experience.

“You didn’t feel cramped or under pressure to deliver, so to speak. You had room,” said Brown.

Gordon and Doug Rawlinson, owners of Rawlco Radio, provided the lead donation for the centre and hundreds more followed to help this state of the art facility become a reality.
