Melfort woman faces attempted murder charges against two children

Nov 2, 2010 | 4:11 PM

A Melfort woman is facing two attempted murder charges after being found with two children inside a running vehicle that was in an enclosed abandoned building.

Police say that on Nov. 1, at around 2:30 p.m. two individuals found the building with the vehicle running inside it. The building was located approximately 9 kilometres north of Melfort.

Police say the two helped a 34-year-old woman and two children out of the vehicle.

RCMP officers responded and arrested the woman. They then took her to the hospital and back to their detachment where they laid charges of attempted murder against the two children.

She was kept in custody until her court appearance this morning.

Police say the two children did not require hospitalization.

“The children are safe—they were located safely and in good condition,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Paul Dawson.

Dawson said he was unable to confirm whether or not the children were with parents or in protective custody.

Police say the woman knew the two children and that the incident was not a random act.
Their investigation continues.

The names of the accused and the children cannot be released due to a publication ban.

The suspect remains in custody until her next court appearance on Nov. 30.
