Fire at Parkland Ambulance

Oct 30, 2010 | 5:25 PM

Fire crews blocked off parts of 13th Street East on Saturday  as they tended to a fire at Parkland Ambulance.

Brian Reichle, Parkland Ambulance spokesman, said they really don’t know what happened.

“We got notified smoke was coming out of one of our buildings so I came next door from one of our other facilities and the fire department was just coming on the scene and there was a bunch of black smoke coming out of the building, out of the vents,” he said.

The building was a storage site, two buildings down from their downtown office. He said is an operational building, but one that they use just for equipment. It housed their rescue quad, rescue trailer and disaster trailer as well as ambulances.

One of the ambulances is completely totalled. He said he is not sure if the others will still be usable.

“As far as the other three, four units in there until they get assessed due to the smoke damage we won’t have any results until they advise us what’s going to take place with them,” he said explaining the vehicles do not have any physical exterior damage.

They need to make sure the smoke and debris is completely cleaned out of them before they are used to transport patients.

Reichle said he does not expect the set back to hamper ambulance service in the city.

“They are extra units we have here that we do use. Other main units are still functional, I mean it’s going to cause an inconvenience for sure, but I mean certainly we will continue with day to day operations as normal.”

The fire is under investigation.
