Local MLAs will be coming back with quite an earful after the throne speech was handed down in Saskatchewan on Wednesday.

The speech talked about Saskatchewan being on a new road.

This figurative road has brought an increased population to our province and will now take the province forward, said Darryl Hickie, MLA for Prince Albert Carlton riding.

“It’s a vision. A new road where we can tackle ongoing issues like doctor shortages. New ways of providing money for municipalities through the full one per cent PST revenue sharing.” Hickie said.
“It’s got a lot of new innovative ways of doing business. It’s all about bringing more people in.”

With the next election in a year Hickie said he is confident that the government can fulfill promises made citing the fact that earlier this month the target for hiring more nurses was met.

Darcy Furber, MLA for Prince Albert Northcote said he doesn’t agree.

The throne speech ignored key Prince Albert projects that he called unfulfilled promises.

“They were made without any thought toward the revenue sharing program. They were made as individual promises on three separate occasions,” Furber said.

A new bridge, a long-term care facility, and the pulp mill are all issues.

Furber said he doubts the government will be able to do anything about those issues before the next election.

Funding for those projects would be over and above the allotted one per cent PST revenue sharing for Saskatchewan municipalities.
