UPDATE: Highway travel

Oct 27, 2010 | 11:57 AM

Highway travel is not recommended unless people have to.

The Highway Hotline is not recommending travel on most Prince Albert areas due to icy conditions and reduced visibility.

The Melfort, Tisdale, and Nipawin areas are also particularly bad.

“My truck weighs 30,000 pounds and I was in the ditch ten times yesterday,” said John Thiessen who makes deliveries for Vanhoutte Coffee Services.

Thiessen has been driving for 27 years and said these conditions are among the worst he has ever seen.

The ministry of highways has reopened highway six south of Melfort near the Pleasantdale Access.

The section of highway was closed for a few hours this morning while a semi was removed from the ditch.

Meantime, jackknifed semi-trucks have forced a section of the Trans-Canada highway to close. The closure starts at Indian Head and goes straight to the Manitoba border.
