Overcrowding at the SPCA in Prince Albert

Oct 21, 2010 | 11:27 AM

Normally a stray dog could have a temporary home in Prince Albert’s SPCA, but the city’s animal shelter has no more room for man’s best friend.

It’s a full house at the SPCA, with more than 30 dogs and even more cats making temporary homes out of every available space at the animal shelter.

They are so full they have had to use their storage sheds as extra kennels, said Debbie Lehner, manager of the SPCA.

Now that the facility has passed its maximum capacity, it will probably stay full right up until the spring, she said.

“Right now we are to full capacity here. We have 29 kennels and we have 31 dogs here and we have close to 15 in foster care,” said Lehner.

She said looking around it's easy to see why the SPCA is trying to fund a new building. A $3 million project is in the works that includes a new shelter, boarding kennel, and dog park.

“To have a new facility is just going to be absolutely phenomenal for all of the pets in our care. You know we do have pets who get sick here. They have to isolate from other animals and we don’t have a way to do that. The new facility will provide that,” said Lehner.

The SPCA is hoping to move into a new facility within the next year and a half.
