Food banks in the province have been seeing more and more people coming through the doors.

Activity at the Prince Albert's Food bank has increases so much they are going to have to expand.
According to Ron Bergen with the food bank, the building plans are ready, grants have been applied for and part of the $130,000 expansion project has already begun.

The new addition to the building on 11th street will give the food bank double the shelf space they have now.

“I guess it’s a fact people have to realize, and especially now the way the economy is… housing costs have gone up,” said Bergen.

“People have to spend more money there and they have less for food and therefore they’re looking to food banks or somewhere to get some more assistance.”

He said the community has always been a great support to the food bank but for this project they are going to have to ask the public and local businesses for help financially.

“So far this year we have already, in six months, spent $9,000 of our own money buying food because we were short,” he said.

About $25,000 has already gone towards the food bank’s roof and according to Bergen they are now waiting to find out if they will be given a grant to make improvements to their kitchen.

The food bank has also applied for a grant to fund kitchen improvements. Bergen is not sure what they will do if that grant doesn't come through.
