LONGUEUIL — Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen connected with Earth from deep space today in a historic first for the Canadian Space Agency, as part of a live question-and-answer session during the Artemis II mission.

The virtual event featured Hansen speaking live from aboard NASA's Orion spacecraft, approximately three days into the 10-day lunar flyby mission.

The event, hosted by CSA President Lisa Campbell, marked the first in a series of planned space-to-Earth communications during the mission.

Hansen shared his impressions of the journey so far and provided insight into daily life aboard the spacecraft as it travels beyond low Earth orbit.

He was asked what the most shocking thing about his journey was so far, and responded by saying, "Riding the rocket for us has just been extraordinary, and we have all these simulations, but it felt so different for us in real life." he continued by saying, "the views of the Earth and the crescent Earth is really incredible."

The April 1 launch is the first crewed mission to circle the moon in more than 50 years and includes a four-person international crew, with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch.

When asked what the team is looking to focus on when they go around the backside of the Moon, Hansen said, "Something scientists have added for us is we're going to see an eclipse of the sun behind the moon, which would be pretty neat."

His participation is a milestone for Canada, as he is serving as mission specialist for Artemis II, becoming the first Canadian astronaut to venture into deep space.

Hansen, when asked about a message he would have to young Canadians watching him, said, "It's important that you find what you're passionate about, but that you share those passions with others because you're gonna find that they're going to help you achieve them."

The CSA says additional live events with Hansen are planned for later in the mission, including tomorrow morning, offering Canadians multiple opportunities to hear directly from orbit as the spacecraft continues its journey around the moon and back to Earth.

NEW YORK (AP) — Matvei Michkov had a goal and two assists and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Islanders 4-1 on Friday night to move within one point of the Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Travis Sanheim and Alex Bump had a goal and an assist each and Owen Tippett also scored for Philadelphia. Dan Vladar finished with 20 saves. The Columbus Blue Jackets are also tied with the Flyers with 88 points.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored for New York and Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves in his 10th straight appearance, but the Islanders lost their third straight in a tightly contested Eastern Conference playoff race.

Michkov fired a shot from behind the goal line off Sorokin’s pad early in the second period to give the Flyers a 3-0 lead.

Tippett opened the scoring, completing a forehand-backhand move off a pass from Sanheim with less than seven minutes remaining in the first period.

Bump extended the Flyers’ lead to two goals when he caught Sorokin out of position and sent a wrist shot just inside the post.

Pageau scored off a feed from Mathew Barzal with less than five minutes remaining in the second period to pull New York within 3-1.

Sanheim scored midway through the third period to restore Philadelphia’s three-goal lead and put the game out of reach.

Elsewhere in the NHL on Friday:

BLUES 6 DUCKS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Dylan Holloway scored a pair of power-play goals, Robert Thomas had a goal and two assists, and St. Louis kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a win over Anaheim.

Pius Suter and Colton Parayko each had a goal and an assist for St. Louis and Jonatan Berggren added a goal. Joel Hofer stopped 24 shots for the Blues, who pulled to within three points of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with seven games left.

Ryan Poehling had a goal and an assist, and Jeffrey Viel scored for the Ducks, who remain tied with Edmonton for first place in the Pacific Division but have lost four straight games. Lukas Dostal stopped 23 shots.

St. Louis extended a 3-2 first-period lead with two goals in the second. Tyler Tucker corralled a rebound behind the goal line and flicked a pass to Suter, who snapped a shot past Dostal for a 4-2 lead at the 3:08 mark. Parayko’s shot from the right circle beat Dostal glove-side for a 5-2 lead with 3:10 left.

Holloway’s power-play goal in the third made it 6-2.

The teams combined for five goals in the first period.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced recalls due to possible listeria contamination affecting products including salads, cheese and meal kits.

The agency says Co-Op brand creamy garlic and spinach salad, sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan with best-before dates between March 24 and April 4 are recalled and should not be consumed.

Numerous cheese products sold nationally, including Bothwell shredded three-cheese nacho blend in 400-gram and one-kilogram quantities, Goldstream cheddar style shredded processed cheese product, and Paradise Island brand Asiago shredded cheese are also among the recalls over listeria concerns.

A recall for some cheese ingredients included in certain Hello Fresh brand meal kits, sold across Canada has also been expanded from an earlier one issued last Monday.

Complete lists of affected products are available on the CFIA website.

Listeria can contaminate a food product without making it appear spoiled, and those who consume those foods may develop symptoms including vomiting, nausea and persistent fever, although the CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses associated with any of the recalls.

SAN ANTONIO — Robert MacIntyre added the Valero Texas Open this year to be sharp for the Masters, and he looked every bit of that Friday with four birdies in his final five holes for an 8-under 64 and a four-shot lead over Ryder Cup teammate Ludvig Aberg.

MacIntyre felt comfortable with his swing from start, taking advantage of a back nine that included a hybrid that rolled out to eight feet for eagle on the par-5 14th.

What made the difference was his finish, with all four of the Scot’s birdies from 10 feet or closer.

He was in the same group as Aberg, whose 67 included holing out with a wedge from 120 yards for eagle on the par-4 sixth. The Swede’s only disappointing was missing the fairway on his final hole at No. 9 and three-putting from 100 feet.

MacIntyre was at 14-under 130.

“I didn’t play last year, just went straight into Augusta. This was an adjustment for that reason,” MacIntyre said. “I wanted to be sharp — or sharper — going into Augusta.”

The Texas Open is the final chance for so many others to get into the Masters with a win, though MacIntyre is starting to make those odds seem a little bit longer.

Tony Finau, who hasn't missed the Masters since 2017, was one shot out of the lead going into the second round when he had three bogeys in six holes at the start. He had to rally for a 69, which included a 35-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th. That put him five shots behind, along with Kevin Roy, Bud Cauley and Thorbjorn Olesen.

“It was nice to make an eagle on the last,” Finau said. “I hit a really good drive, pushed my second shot a little, got lucky, covered the water and was able to roll that one in. Sometimes those are the small little breaks that you need to be towards the top of the leaderboard.”

Mark Hubbard, who led after 18 holes with a 65, followed that with a 77 to make the cut on the number at 2-under 142. He went from one shot ahead to 12 shots behind.

Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., is tied for 23rd with nine others at 5 under. A.J Ewart of Coquitlam, B.C., is in a 10-way tie for 33rd at 4 under. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., is tied for 60th at 2 under with 11 others, including Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Mississauga, Ont.

Aberg said he has moved on from his rough back nine that cost him at The Players Championship two weeks ago. He has another chance over the final 36 holes at the TPC San Antonio, and that's all that mattered to him.

“I feel great. I feel like I’ve been playing good golf,” Aberg said. “For me, golf is about putting yourself in situations where you can win tournaments. I feel like I haven’t really done that very well the last 12 months or so, but starting to see it now, which has been really nice. So I’m looking forward to one more shot at it this week.”

MacIntyre is trying to become the third straight left-handed player to win the Texas Open, following Brian Harman last year and Akshay Bhatia in 2024.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — RJ Barrett scored 25 points, Brandon Ingram had 17 points and seven rebounds and the Toronto Raptors built a first-half lead, extended it in the third and coasted to a 128-96 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.

Rookie Collin Murray-Boyles, the ninth overall pick last summer, added 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting to help Toronto snap a two-game skid. Murray-Boyles had a career-high 20 points against Sacramento on Wednesday night.

Trying to avoid the Eastern Conference play-in tournament, Toronto remained seventh in the standings, through it has the same record as sixth-place Philadelphia.

GG Jackson led Memphis with 30 points, and Cedric Coward had 15. The Grizzlies lost for the eighth time in nine games. Jackson was 10-of-16 from the field.

A 13-4 run by Toronto to end the first half gave the Raptors a 59-41 lead at the break. The advantage would stretch to 31 near the five-minute mark of the third, and reach 33 in the fourth quarter.

As for the Grizzlies, as has been the case for some time, they were stuck with makeshift lineups of 10-day signees and two-way players mixed with a few regulars on the floor at any one time. By game time, 13 Memphis players were on the injury list.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Lauren Coughlin continued her strong play at Shadow Creek even in windy conditions Friday that played havoc with the second-round scores at the Aramco Championship to shoot a 3-under 69 and open a five-shot lead.

Coughlin was 8 under. Hyo Joo Kim kept alive her hopes for a third straight LPGA Tour tournament victory, shooting 73 to match Leona Maguire (71) at 3 under.

Coughlin entered the day in a three-way tie for the lead after opening with a 67, but now has created clear separation. She nearly won here last year when it was a match-play event before falling to Madelene Sagstrom in the final pairing.

Now Coughlin is close again. Even with a sizable lead, though, she isn't ready to celebrate.

“There is a lot of golf to be played,” Coughlin said. “As you can see, you can make big numbers really easily. So just try to stick to what I’ve been doing the last two days and see what happens.”

Wind gusts of 32 kilometres per hour and higher made for a difficult round. A day after 26 players posted red numbers, that total was 11 on Friday, making the picturesque but demanding course almost hidden from the lights of the Las Vegas Strip even more difficult.

“It’s almost bordering on a U.S. Open-style setup,” Maguire said. “You see how few people are under par. It feels a little bit like a major without being a major.”

Miyu Yamashita got to experience that full effect. Sitting at 5 under with two holes to play, she went in the water on the par-3 17th and then took three shots to get on the green. The triple bogey put her at 2 under with second-ranked Nelly Korda (74) and Nanna Koerstz Madsen (70).

Anna Huang of Vancouver is in a four-way tie for seventh at 1 under. Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., is tied with 10 others for 31st at 4 over.

Korda, who won this event two years ago, struggled over the final nine in the second round. She bogeyed two holes and had a double on the par-4 first.

The top 20 players in the world signed up for the Aramco Championship, no doubt attracted to the $4 million purse in the first year that this tournament is strictly stroke play. This event is co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour.

Coughlin birdied Nos. 7, 8, 10 and 12, holing a 50-foot putt on No. 8. But she bogeyed the par-4 14th and 15th to halt her momentum and bring her back to the field. Coughlin then rolled in a 25-foot putt on the par-5 16th for an especially timely birdie.

“Yeah, definitely kind of helped smooth things out there towards the end,” Coughlin said. “Felt like I was playing good, especially those two holes before that. I think the easiest way to describe this golf course, especially when it gets windy, it’s so easy to make bogey. One little thing and you’re making bogey. Maybe even worse.”

Amelia Garvey made the largest leap, answering an opening 79 with a 69 even with a triple bogey on the par-3 17th. That got her to 4 over, enough to make the cut of 7 over.

“I actually played really well yesterday,” Garvey said. “I just couldn’t putt. Was putting a bit like Stevie Wonder out there.”

OTTAWA - Sandra Abstreiter made 39 saves to pick up her first shutout in the Professional Women's Hockey League and led the Montreal Victoire to a 3-0...

OTTAWA — Sandra Abstreiter made 39 saves to pick up her first shutout in the Professional Women’s Hockey League and led the Montreal Victoire to a 3-0 win over the Ottawa Charge Friday night.

Kaitlin Willoughby, with two goals, and Abby Roque scored for the Victoire (14-4-2-5), who moved into first place in the eight-team PWHL.

Gwyneth Philips stopped 23 shots for the Charge.

The Charge (6-7-1-11) returned to Ottawa after playing a record six straight games on the road and even Friday’s game wasn’t officially on home ice.

The Charge took over the Canadian Tire Centre and welcomed its largest crowd of the season (17,114), but even that wasn’t enough to help them out.

The Victoire have already clinched a playoff spot while the Charge (6-7-1-10) are fighting to get into the final playoff position.

Ottawa sits one point back of the Toronto Sceptres. Both teams have five games remaining and will square off twice before the end of the regular season.

Trailing 2-0, Ottawa had a great chance early in the third when Emily Clark put a shot on goal and the rebound lay in the crease but no Charge player was close enough to get to it in time.

Willoughby scored her second into an empty net with 42.2 seconds remaining to ice the game.

The Charge had a flurry of chances early in the second but couldn’t find a way to capitalize.

Peyton Hemp had back-to-back chances and came up short. And less than a minute later Montreal broke in on a two-on-one that ended with Willoughby beating Philips high blocker side for her first of the season. Abstreiter picked up an assist on the play.

Montreal made it 2-0 scoring on the power play. Laura Stacey found Abby Roque breaking in alone after getting behind Ottawa’s defence to tip a shot past Philips.

There were chances at both ends of the ice, but the game remained scoreless after the opening 20 minutes. Ottawa’s Sarah Wozniewicz believed she had scored at the 16-minute mark but upon review it was determined the puck never fully crossed the line. Wozniewicz also hit the post earlier in the period.

TAKEAWAYS

Charge: Ottawa generated lots of shots but too many of them were easy for Abstreiter to see.

Victoire: Montreal was able to get in close on Philips and it was the difference in the action-packed game.

KEY STAT

Montreal’s victory Friday was its 50th in regular-season history.

UP NEXT

Victoire: Host the Seattle Torrent on Tuesday.

Charge: Host the Seattle Torrent on Wednesday.

A Regina board game designer has put a fresh spin on a classic, creating new ways for families and friends to gather around the crokinole board.Colter...

A Regina board game designer has put a fresh spin on a classic, creating new ways for families and friends to gather around the crokinole board.

Colter Hahn designed two games, Crokinole Cards and Crokinole Imperium, that build on the traditional tabletop game while adding new rules, new challenges and more ways to play.

Hahn said one of the biggest goals was to make crokinole more enjoyable for players of different skill levels, especially when experienced players are matched up against newcomers.

“Sometimes when you’re playing against someone that you know is really good and has a higher skill level, it can be challenging to play against someone who’s new, and that’s not as fun,” Hahn said.

“So what Crokinole Cards introduces is a way to play with everyone, beginners and experts alike, as well as it brings in a cooperative way to play and a solo way to play.”

That shift matters because crokinole, while simple to learn, can quickly become intimidating when one player is far more skilled than the others. Hahn said his additions are meant to open the game up, not change what people already love about it.

Crokinole has been around since the 1800s, and Hahn said he saw an opportunity to add a little more variety to the long-standing game.

“So I’ve created two games, one’s called Crokinole Cards, and one’s called Crokinole Imperium,” he said.

“And both games are used on a crokinole board, so you need to have a crokinole board first to be able to play them.”

He described Crokinole Cards as a way to make the game more flexible, with solo and cooperative play that lets people test their skills, practise, or play with a wider mix of people.

Crokinole Imperium, meanwhile, adds secret objectives, perks, bonuses and different scoring systems for players who want a more layered experience.

“If you want a little bit more with that, these just give you a little bit more value for it,” Hahn said.

The idea started when Steven Brown, owner of BrownCastle Games, posted in a board game designers group, looking for someone to create a game for his crokinole boards.

“I came up with a few different concepts and pitched them to him,” Hahn said. “There was about 27 different people, I think he said, that applied for that, and he ended up picking my games, which is really cool.”

From there, the project grew. Hahn said Crokinole Imperium was published by BrownCastle Games, while he initially published Crokinole Cards himself through his own company, Hahn Games, before later handing that over as well.

For Hahn, the project blends a personal passion with a game many Canadians already know well.

And during a long weekend like Easter, when many households pull out board games and spend more time together, he said that extra flexibility could help bring even more people to the table.

The Easter Bunny shouldn't get too cold delivering Easter baskets to kids in Saskatchewan this weekend.Environment Canada Meteorologist James Colangel...

The Easter Bunny shouldn’t get too cold delivering Easter baskets to kids in Saskatchewan this weekend.

Environment Canada Meteorologist James Colangelo said much of the province should be staying dry this weekend.

“It’s going to be a rather uneventful weekend weather-wise,” said Colangelo. “Shouldn’t have too much trouble traveling on the roads.”

Colangelo said temperatures are expected to be a bit below seasonal norms on Friday, with highs between 1 C and 3 C expected, and some low-lying clouds across southern Saskatchewan.

“The clouds should clear up on Friday evening into Saturday, and that should help with some of the snow melting there,” the meteorologist added.

On Saturday, Colangelo said temperatures are set to get a bit warmer for many parts of Saskatchewan, including Prince Albert, Meadow Lake and Melfort which will see highs around 3 C, while the Battlefords area forecast calls for a high of 5 C on Saturday.

“A nice little warm up, but it doesn’t last too long, as temperatures go back down to 1 C or 2 C on Sunday,” he said.

Meanwhile, Colangelo said a low-pressure system is set to move through north-central Saskatchewan on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

“All the precipitation from that seems to miss the bulk of the southern part of the province. It kind of moves through the La Ronge area a bit,” he said.

“It should be fairly uneventful for many folks in Saskatchewan.”

But southern Saskatchewan is not out of the woods yet in terms of snowfall for the season, he added, with more snow potentially falling next week.

“We’re still kind of dealing with these wild swings of weather in the late winter, early spring here,” Colangelo said.

“Looks like we might see a little bit more (snow) on Wednesday afternoon as a low-pressure system makes its way through, but it’s a little bit far away right now. Things can change.”

Colangelo said temperatures have been staying on the cooler side lately because the overall weather patterns in the province are not changing much.
