Chill Frozen Out Of Tournament Title

Dec 4, 2018 | 7:09 AM

The PA Midget AA Dairy Queen Chill attended the 25th Banff Hockey Academy Christmas Challenge Cup in Banff this past weekend.

The Chill finished third overall after pool play after three hard fought battles.

Aaron Campbell led the Chill in the first game over Southern Saskatchewan’s Prairie Storm with a goal and two assists in a 3-2 victory. Laine Petreman provided the heroics in the Chill’s next game versus the Winnipeg Warriors scoring the winning shootout goal in a 4-3 penalty filled game.

The Chill suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Sharks which put the Chill in to third place overall and set to play league rivals, Saskatoon Sabercats, in the semifinals. The Sabercats have defeated the Chill twice this year in league play but the Chill took the cat by the tail and came out on top in the semi finals with a 9-4 win, led by Jack Kowblick’s hat trick and Caden Joanis’ five point game.

The finals saw a chance for the Chill to vindicate their only tournament loss as they revved up to play the Winnipeg Sharks again. After no scoring in the first period, Kowblick started off the scoring in the second with the lone goal.  Ben Zultok put the Chill up 2-0 with an unassisted goal early in the third before the Sharks mounted their attack.

The Chill found themselves down, 3-2 late in the game before Captain, Nic Prediger, found the back of the net with 56 second remaining forcing overtime. The five minute three on three decided nothing and the Chill found themselves headed for a shootout to decide the championship.

The Sharks managed to squeak out the win after the fifth round of shooters sending the Chill back to PA with a second place finish.
