How to Reverse Sun Damage

May 22, 2013 | 10:46 AM

Information about protecting skin from the sun is everywhere. Yet there are still people who opt out of sun protection. Even those of us with the best intentions can get caught unprepared in the midst of sun and fun. Sunburns are easy to come by. A sunburn today can turn into sun damage down the road. If you didn’t practice sun protection in the past and find sun damage has come to roost, here’s some help.

A treatment that combines microdermabrasion followed by cold laser can undo a lot of damage, comfortably and pleasantly. It will take more than one treatment. Expect to do 4 to 6 treatments, 2 to 4 weeks apart, depending on severity.
Microdermabrasion corrects skin at the surface level. Cold laser works in the skin to correct imbalance and disturbance at a cellular level. Expect skin to look younger, firmer, clearer, and more even toned.

A lactic acid peel can also help to correct irregular pigment and uneven skin tone. Lactic acid is the safest peel and can be used on different skin types and skin colors safely. A prepping solution is applied after the face, neck or upper chest (décolletage) has been cleansed. This is followed by the peel itself. After sitting on the skin surface for several minutes, the peel solution is removed with a neutralizing solution. It’s best to start a course of lactic acid peels after your sun exposure is tapering off eg at the end of summer or late fall.

Microdermabrasion and cold laser treatments can be alternated with lactic acid peels. If you are patient and persistent, you can get a visible difference to the appearance and quality of your skin. You’ll look better and feel better knowing you have reversed old sun damage.
