There is still a lot to play for

Feb 20, 2012 | 8:10 AM

The Raiders are officially out of the playoff picture. Their 2011-12 hopes were dashed with Saturday's 6-2 loss in Brandon despite a genuine hard working 60 minute effort which went unrewarded.

There have been flashes of brilliance individually from Mark McNeill's CHL player of the week award to Cole Holowenko's goaltending greatness which sparked a pre-and-post Christmas five game win streak. However the only consistant element all season has been inconsistancy at all positions and in all aspects of the game.

This doesn't mean it's time to mail it in for the rest of regular season. Players have their futures to think of. Justin Maylan, the lone 20-year-old left on the roster has pro aspirations, while many others are playing for spots on next year's team. Head Coach Steve Young as well as assistants Craig Bedard and Dave Manson will continue to do everything in their power to get the team ready for the final 13 games and the responses of each and every player will be noted. This is more than just playing out the string, it's a continuing audition for next year's cast.

Fan support has excellent. Current average ticket sales of around 2,350 are at their highest in the past decade and for the most part those in attendance have been rewarded with entertaining hockey. This team has usually left fans heading home that night and to work the next day with something to talk about.

There is still a lot to see. Captain Mark McNeill will likely be cashing NHL pay cheques in the not too distant future. Potential future captain Josh Morrissey continues to play like a veteran despite his tender age of 16. Leading goal man Mike Winther is very high on the NHL draft radar. Anthony Bardero's skill and speed are a preview on what we could see from him next season and let's not forget Maylan's playmaking prowess.

Expect the entire crew to be motivated by the spoilers label, wanting to end the season on a high note both on the ice and through their many community appearances.

The season won't be over until the final buzzer, overtime goal or shootout attempt Saturday March 17th in Moose Jaw. it's up to coaches, players and fans alike to make the most of it.
