Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Feb 13, 2012 | 5:48 AM

The basic premise of this movie, as it was in “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” is that the original books by Jules Verne were not fictional. There is in fact a mysterious Island. A troubled teen cracks a code and sets out, with the help of his step-father (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), to find his long lost grandfather (Michael Caine). Their journey takes them to the South Pacific, and after getting sucked into the eye of a hurricane, they find the Mysterious Island. They are then forced to find a way off the Island, before it sinks into the ocean. Along the way they encounter plenty of perils including giant lizards, and an electric eel that could give the Lochness Monster a run for its money.

If you are rolling your eyes, this movie may not be for you. There are lots of cheesy moments and certainly more than a few jokes that will make you groan. It is however a fun adventure movie that you can take your kids to. There are some funny lines and Dwayne Johnson does a good job in the lead role. Since leaving the theatre I’ve been working non – stop on my pec -pop. The star power of Johnson is only outshined by Michael Caine, who is very funny, as the adventurous, and somewhat eccentric grandfather.

I was a little disappointed not to be able to watch this movie, as it was intended, in 3D. Unfortunately the theatre in Prince Albert only has one theatre equipped with the 3D projector and that honour this week goes to “Star Wars: Phantom Menace.” There are some very cool effects in this movie that would be even better when viewed in 3D.

Overall I rate this movie 2.5 (you’ll understand when you watch it) out of 5. It is a fun family movie however I feel that the kids will get more enjoyment out of this than someone who is over the age of 25.
