Would you like to reduce your credit card interest to six percent?

That is how the latest telephone scam begins. It is a recording. “Press nine to speak to an operator,” it says.

The operator is John. He barely speaks English. He will assure you how honest he is and even a number where you can reach him: 248. He will try every persuasion method you can imagine. He repeatedly tells you he can't lower your credit card rate unless he can double check your card number with the one he has. “Please tell your credit card number,” he says.

That's all he wants – your credit card number. And he isn't going to lower your credit card interest fee because he has nothing to do with any credit card company. He is going to use your card number.

Don't give it out. You will be astounded at your next credit card bill if you do give it out to 'John' or anyone else who asks. Only give out your credit card number if you initiate the call and you are satisfied the person who receives it is legitimate.

This is a major scam. He wants to go Christmas shopping and a whole lot of other spending on your card.

Beware.
