Cumberland House faces flooding

Jun 20, 2011 | 12:07 PM

A Northern Saskatchewan community is watching the nearby water levels very closely.

A public meeting took place in Cumberland House this morning to discuss flood concerns.

The only road in and out of the community is nearly impassable — only light trucks are being allowed on Highway 123.

Three giant berms are being constructed to keep the water at bay.

Meanwhile supplies in Cumberland House are running low.

“I haven't been able to get any trucks or supplies to our community for a good two weeks now. The shelves at the store are dwindling down to almost nothing,” said Raymond Dussion, store manager at the Chief Island Community Store.

“As of this morning, we've got 1,200 litres of gas and it usually runs out in half a day.”

Raymond said he has not received any grocery items like meat, bread, or milk for about a week.
