Sask’s Kleiter off to hot start at Junior Curling Champs

Jan 19, 2019 | 9:55 PM

Rylan Kleiter and the rest of Team Saskatchewan had quite the opening day at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships on Saturday in Prince Albert.

Kleiter, and his Saskatoon Sutherland-based team of Trevor Johnson, Joshua Mattern and Matthieu Taillon only had to play 16 ends to pick up a pair of lopsided wins. They beat Nunavut 12-3 and Ontario 8-2 on Saturday, both at the Art Hauser Centre, to improve to 2-0.

Against Ontario, Kleiter had an 8-0 lead after six ends, before eventually closing out the game.

On the women’s side, Sara England and her Regina Callie-based team of Rachel Erickson, Sarah Hoag and Jade Goebel finished the first day with a 1-1. They beat Newfoundland and Labrador 10-5 to start, before falling to the 2-0 Manitoba 8-3. Manitoba, skipped by Mackenzie Zacharias, had two-enders in each of the final three ends to separate themselves and go on to win.

And hosting team from Moose Jaw, skipped by Skylar Ackerman, only played the late 7:30 p.m. draw and had to begin her tournament by facing Kaitlyn Jones and the defending world championship winning outfit from Nova Scotia. Ackerman got off to a good start by stealing a point in the first end, and held Jones to one in the second. But Jones was able to get two steals, before ending the game with a three-ender in the ninth to win 6-2.

Here’s a round-up of the rest of the scores.
