Corrections officials reviewing inmate escape

Corrections officials continue to investigate how an inmate escaped from Saskatchewan Penitentiary on New Year’s Eve.

CSC spokesperson Jeff Campbell told paNOW there are few details they can release about the incident at the moment, but the incident is being reviewed. Steven Briggs, 24, escaped from the minimum security unit at Saskatchewan Penitentiary on New Year’s Eve, stealing a Correctional Service of Canada vehicle in the process.

“Typically, our staff would be, following an escape, collecting any available information to give us some insights on what happened and when, and to see if any adjustments need to be made in terms of public safety,” Campbell said Wednesday.

paNOW reported last week that keys to the vehicle were not left in the ignition and the truck used in the escape was not running at the time.

“When we do have an escape, there is an assessment done of the inmate who has escaped to ascertain what security level is appropriate for that person given an escape,” Campbell said.

Briggs turned himself in to corrections officials at Bowden Institution in southern Alberta on Sunday. He was serving a jail sentence seven years and three months for assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, robbery, vehicle theft and possession of property obtained by crime.

The CSC said Briggs was sentenced on the charges in Red Deer.
