Mintos ready for second-half

Jan 5, 2019 | 7:00 AM

A fresher and healthier Mintos squad takes the ice this weekend at the Art Hauser Centre, as they start the second-half of their season.

The Mintos, who currently sit in fifth place overall in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, face the Moose Jaw Generals Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Head Coach Ken Morrison said he felt the team had a good first-half, despite a number of players out with injuries.

“We’re looking forward to having most of the guys in the lineup to start the second-half, it’ll be the first time [all season] we’ve played with all our team,” he said.

The Mintos trail the Regina Pat Canadians by seven points. Morrison said the key to his team’s success the next few months will be hard work and perseverance.

“We’ve gotta work at playing a whole 60 minute game and I think having most of our guys back will help with that,” he said.

Gabe Klassen, 15, leads the team in points. Through 29 games, he has scored 19 goals and added 16 assists for a total of 35 points. Klassen said he feels his team can match up with anyone.

“Like we don’t get outworked too often in any games really,” he said.

Klassen, who said he was pleased with how he has played so far this year, added he had set some big goals for himself.

“I just wanted to work myself into a first line area, and be the guy that gets leaned on in a last minute situation or when the team needs a big goal,” he said.

Following this weekend’s game, the Minto play again Jan. 10 at home versus the Battlefords Stars, and then on Jan. 13 in Tisdale versus the Trojans.
