Festival of Lights brightens up Candle Lake

Dec 27, 2018 | 4:00 PM

The Candle Lake community is celebrating Christmas with a new holiday light display.

The inaugural Festival of Lights event is taking place over the next few days at the Sandy Bay Campground in the Candle Lake Provincial Park, featuring lights, hot chocolate and campfires. Events started Dec. 22 with a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and continue Friday, with activities happening every night, including New Year’s Eve. A walking tour of the lights is planned for Friday night, and snowshoes will be available for use. Driving tours are planned for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Candle Lake Provincial Park Manager Rena Laliberte said the family-friendly event has been a hit so far with visitors and area residents.

“We have 17 sites that have been decorated,” Laliberte added. “I think everybody’s just gathered up in the community and really enjoying it. It’s something to do with your family.”

Heather Scott, the chief administrative officer with the Resort Village of Candle Lake said local community groups and businesses were happy to take part in the new event.

“I just think anything that brings people to the community any time of year, is a benefit for everyone,” Scott said.

There is no cost to take in the Festival of Lights, although organizers are taking donations. Money raised through the silver collection will go toward area improvements.
